Recently, Vietnamese media reported that the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam has evaluated the potential for the development of nuclear power plants in the country and specifically pointed out five areas suitable for the construction of large-scale nuclear power projects.
In the revised draft of the National Power Development Plan 2021-2030, which looks forward to 2050 and is currently being solicited for public comments, eight potential sites in five provinces have been identified.
Each nuclear power plant has an estimated development potential of about 4-6 GW of nuclear power capacity. The Ministry of Industry and Trade said it would consider building nuclear power plants in three key areas, with a potential installed capacity of 25-30 GW in the central and southern regions, about 10 GW in the central region, and about 4-5 GW in the central and northern regions.
Currently, only Phuc Dinh and Vinh Hai counties have made public their site selection plans for nuclear power plants. Other potential sites are still being evaluated for the construction of four large nuclear reactors. However, given that no formal plans have been announced, these locations will need to be re-evaluated to accommodate possible socio-economic changes in the region.
